Choosing the correct propeller for your boat

The propeller, also known as the boat prop is one of the most important parts, so it’s one that you need to get right if you want your boat to perform efficiently. The size of the propeller needs to be right, and generally the smaller the propeller, the smaller the boat and the larger propeller, the larger your boat.

You may have noticed this, but different propellers have a different number of blades. Some will have 3 blades, some will have 4 and others will have 5 or 6. For most purposes, 3 and 4 blade boat propellers can be used interchangeably on outboards and sterndrives without much of a change in performance. Material is an important factor too though and composite, aluminum and stainless steel are all popular options. We recommend stainless steel for most boats because they offer the highest performance and best durability. They’re more expensive though, but you shouldn’t let this sway your decision if you want a boat that performs efficiently.
