Boat Towing Safety Check

Before you hit the road with a boat in tow, you need to perform a full pre-tow safety inspection of your rig and remember these key tips:

1. First check to make sure the vehicle and trailer are properly mated. Including: the light plug, hitch, brake safety cable, and boat safety cables or chains.

2. Check the boat for anything that is not fully secured. If there is any heavy gear on board, ensure is it central in the boat.

3. The nose weight should be around 10-15% of your load, but not exceed the manufacturer’s stated maximum figure for your vehicle. If on the road you notice a sway or snaking of the trailer, slow down, pull over immediately and adjust your load.

4. Complete a final lights check ensuring the brake, running, tail and indicator lights all are working properly.

5. Take turns as wide as you can whilst towing. If there are multiple, use the outside turn lane.

6. Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front because your extra weight increases stopping distance.

7. If a gust of wind pushes the rig sideways, take your foot off of the accelerator but do not step on the brake, to decrease the effect.

8. Upon stopping, check your hubs to ensure they are cool. If not, then your bearings aren’t functioning properly and need servicing immediately.

9. Do not remove the winch strap and safety chain prior to the boat being in the water to prevent the boat slipping off and crashing into the boat ramp.

10. Only tow your boat with a competent and legal tow vehicle.
