Narrowboat holidays have become more popular, with people preferring the relaxation of the river than the bustle of a city. The most important thing is learning how to control the narrowboat whilst on the river. Here are some tips to help you get started.
Check your equipment before setting off
Check that you have the right equipment for your journey, including an anchor, ropes and chains for river or canal travel
Keep to the centre of the canal
Keeping the boat in the canal centre helps avoid unforeseen sharp bends that may lead to an accident. It also allows you to see other boats on the canal and avoid manoeuvres ahead of time.
Slow down when mooring
After slowing down the boat, direct it towards the bank at an angle of about 30 degrees, then steer away tactfully.
Although most boat hiring companies will always give you the basics of controlling a narrowboat, it is important to be a step ahead
